The program’s aim is to provide students with a strong foundation in materials science and nanotechnology together with communication, leadership, and teamwork skills so that they are ready to enter the job market.
1. INTRODUCTION
Materials are found in all sectors of our modern society from healthcare, and environmental treatment to energy conversion storage and communication technology. With the emergence of nanotechnology (the technology deals with designing and fabrication of materials and devices at the nanoscale) in the last decades, the application of materials is given an even larger dimension.
The mission of the Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology (AMSN) undergraduate program at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi is to provide students with a strong foundation in materials science and nanotechnology. Therefore, the program’s curriculum places special emphasis on the fundamental principles that underlie the knowledge and implementation of materials structure, processing, characterization, and performance of all classes of materials. Courses in the program develop students’ knowledge of modern materials science with the application of nanotechnology and teach them to apply skills gained to create innovative solutions to practical problems. Furthermore, to prepare our students for their successful engagement in society they are trained with communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
2. PROGRAM
The curriculum begins in the second academic year of USTH. This second year is devoted to a basic understanding of physics and the chemistry of materials. In the third academic year, students study material fabrication and synthesis, tools for material characterization, and consolidate their knowledge of nanomaterials in life science, energy, and environment application. In addition, students are trained to take part in a research project by completing a group project. Subsequently, they are invited to perform an internship of at least three months in a leading research laboratory or an R&D department in Vietnam or overseas.

3. PROGRAM OUTCOMES
The outcomes of the bachelor’s program in Advanced Materials Sciences and NanoTechnology are listed below:
- The curriculum is developed to promote learning, learning how to learn, and to instill in students a commitment to lifelong learning (e.g. commitment to critical inquiry, development of study and information-processing skills, and a willingness to experiment with new ideas and practices).
- The curriculum offers graduates the ability to do advanced studies, to develop their own personality, have an academic attitude, and be competent in their field of study. The graduates should also have transferable skills, and leadership skills, and should be oriented to the job market and be able to develop their careers.
- The curriculum has clearly formulated learning outcomes, reflecting the relevant demands and needs of all stakeholders.
- The curriculum offers to graduates the ability to apply the fundamentals of nanotechnology and applications.
- The curriculum offers graduates an understanding of material properties in various fields such as physics, chemistry, energy, semiconductor, ….
- The curriculum offers graduates an appreciation for the influence of nanotechnology in modern industry.
4. JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates with Diploma in Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology can find great job opportunities from international agencies and different industrial sectors like materials for energy (solar panel production, batteries, LED), materials for healthcare (drug formulation, sensing kit developer, cosmetics), materials for the environment (water depollution, evaluation of biomass), materials for microelectronics, composites, etc. Appropriate job positions could be R&D research assistant, Quality Control engineer, product developer or production technician. Evidently, qualified students are encouraged to join academia either with a master’s training or with a research assistant position within high education and research institutions.
