Established under the Agreement between the Government of Vietnam and the Government of France, signed on November 12, 2009, and replaced by the Agreement signed on November 2, 2018, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), also called Vietnam France University, was founded under Decision No. 2067/QĐ-TTg dated December 9, 2009 by the Prime Minister of Vietnam.

USTH is the sixth university in Vietnam to achieve international accreditation standards for educational institutions by the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education of France (HCERES), bringing the total number of Vietnamese universities recognized by foreign accreditation organizations to 12.

2. Training Programs

2.1. Regular programs at USTH

USTH offers undergraduate programs in science and technology following the European Bologna Process. The standard duration of a Bachelor’s degree program is 3 years (equivalent to 180 ECTS), with all courses taught in English. For the Maintenance Engineering B1/B2 orientation (Aeronautical Engineering), the duration is 4 years, including 10 months of study and practical training at VAECO, Vietnam Airlines. Graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s degree.

The duration of training for the Pharmacy program is 5 years, with 70% of the courses taught in English and 30% in Vietnamese. Graduates are awarded a Pharmacist degree.

For candidates who meet the admission requirements but do not meet the English entry requirements, the study program includes an additional year focused on enhancing English skills (not applicable to the Pharmacy program).

2.2 Double degree programs 

Since 2022, USTH has cooperated with our partners in France to deploy double-degree programs. Students admitted to the double degree programs will spend their first two years at USTH and have a chance to study their third year in a French institution. Upon graduation, students will be granted two Bachelor’s degrees, one by the USTH and one by a French institution.

3. Eligibility

Vietnamese citizens and foreigners who graduated in 2025 or earlier and meet the eligibility criteria for each admissions method stated in the USTH Admissions Plan are eligible to apply.

4. Admissions methods and criteria

a, For students who graduated from high schools following educational program of the MOET

b. For Vietnamese and foreign students(9) who possessed foreign high school diploma or studied international programs in Vietnam need to meet 2 criteria as follows:

Remarks: 

(1) Candidates applying for the Pharmacy program following methods 1, 2, 3 must be classified as excellent or higher for the academic performance of grade 12 to fulfill the requirements of quality assurance threshold for the health sector in the graduated year stipulated by the MOET

(2) The double degree programs use only the USTH Competency Assessment examination results for admission (AM1).

(3) (4) The knowledge test and admissions interview: Candidates refer to the instructions for the USTH Competency assessment examination in Annex 4 – Admissions Announcement.

(7) Eligibility for direct admission: direct admission is only applicable to the candidates graduating in 2025 and meets at least one (01) of the following conditions within the last three years:

– Candidates win prizes in examinations of selecting national, provincial gifted students (or equivalent): first, second, third prizes or encouragement in natural-science subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics and Geography;

– Candidates win first, second, or third prizes (projects related to natural sciences) in national, regional, and international science and engineering contests (approved by Admission Committee);

– Candidates participate in the international Olympic team selection exam; candidates are official members of the national team participating in the international contest on subjects of natural sciences, international science and engineering contest teams (projects related to natural sciences).

(8) Direct admission for the Aeronautical Engineering program is only applied to students with prizes in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics. Direct admission for the Pharmacy program is only applied to students with prizes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Geography is only applied for candidates of Space science and Satellite Technology specialty.

(9) Foreign applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the use of the English language (IELTS score of 5.0 or higher, or other equivalent certificates) to ensure successful academic engagement at USTH. For the Pharmacy program, in addition to English proficiency, applicants are required to attain the necessary results in the  proficiency test of the Vietnamese language, in accordance with the current regulations established by the MOET.

Remarks:

In case the number of qualified candidates exceeds the enrollment quota, admissions criteria based on the order of applicants’ aspiration registered on the general enrollment support system of the Ministry of Education and Training will be applied to recognize admitted majors.

*For applicants who graduated from 2015 to 2024: besides the admission conditions, they must ensure the attendance in the High school graduation Exam with a combination of suitable exam subjects for the applied program (Annex 2 – Admissions Announcement) and achieved results equal to or higher than the entrance mark of USTH in that year. 

*For applicants who graduated before 2014: besides the admission conditions, they must ensure attendance in national University Entrance exams in blocks A, A1, B and D with results equal to or higher than the entrance mark of USTH in that year

5. Application dossier 

Remarks:

(1)Passport is only eligible for foreign candidates.

(2) For candidates submitting applications in wave 1, wave 2, they may submit the first-semester transcript of grade 12. Candidates are required to update their full grade 12 academic results on the USTH online admissions system after completing the program. Concerning admissions method 2, the admission results will only be recognized if their high school academic results meet the threshold specified by the USTH.

If the grading system is different from the 0-10 scale applied in Vietnam, a document by competent authorities explaining the applied grading system is required.

(3) For applicants who graduated before 2024, besides the above requested dossiers, they need to submit a copy of the certificate on the national university entrance exam result in the graduation year.

(4)Candidates pay admission fees according to the instructions in section 8.

(5)After enrollment, matriculated candidates will take an English test which decides their suitable placement. Students who have an IELTS certificate that achieved a minimum score of 5.0 or TOEFL iBT certificate with a minimum score of 35 will be exempted from the English test and eligible to study for a 3-year program.

Enrollment based on USTH Competency assessment examination results, high school academic performance and an interview, and direct admission.

* The admissions schedule may be changed and will be updated on the website of USTH. Results of direct admission, results of knowledge tests, and interviews will be informed to the candidates via email and the USTH online admissions system.

**Wave 3 will be adapted to the MOET’s schedule.

Enrollment according to the MOET’s system: align with the MOET’s schedule. Regarding the Pharmacy program, applicants, who choose the admissions method based on the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam, must also fulfill the admissions criterion for English proficiency (IELTS certificate with a minimum score of 5.0 or TOEFL iBT certificate with a minimum score of 35 or an equivalent certificate as stipulated in (Annex 3 – Admissions Announcement) and academic performance of grade 12 must be classified as excellent or higher.

1. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program is designed to train a new generation of young scientists with robust scientific ethics, profound expertise, adept language skills, pragmatic know-how, critical thinking acumen, and invaluable soft skills. In the final year, students will be transferred to a French partner university. ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST 2024

(BACHELOR’S PROGRAMS – INTAKE 15)

In order to assess candidates’ English proficiency for placing candidates into suitable programs (3-year/4-year for Bachelor programs) and placing in classes according to proficiency level  (4-year programs), University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) organizes the English Placement Test for admitted candidates, who applying for academic year 2024-2025. 

1. Test takers:

– Candidates who have submitted application dossiers for admission to the USTH  (wave 1 and/or wave 2), received qualifying results for admission, have not obtained an IELTS certificate of 5.0 or higher  or TOEFL iBT certificate of 35 or higher, and wish to study at the USTH.

2. Conditions for exemption from Placement Test:

Candidates are exempted from taking the test when they meet the following conditions: Have an IELTS English Certificate of 5.0 or higher (or TOEFL iBT 35 or higher) within 02 years and 03 months from the date of the test.

Other cases will be considered and decided by the USTH Admissions Committee.

3. Program/class placement:

Based on the test results,candidates are placed into programs/classes according to their English level, specifically:

– Candidates, whose test score are less than 4.5 (IELTS band score), will be accepted to the 4-year program.

– Candidates, whose test score are equivalent to IELTS 4.5, are encouraged to participate in the Summer English Course and are required to take English Placement Test 2 (tentative date is to be announced).

– Candidates, whose test results are equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or higher, will be accepted to the 3-year program.

4. Test schedule and result announcement:

– English Placement Test 1: 10/07/2024 (each candidate ONLY takes 01 session either in the morning or in the afternoon, as announced in the list and agenda sent via email).

– English Placement Test 2: to be announced

– Candidates are required to be present at the test location 30 minutes before the start of the exam (the specific time is in the Exam Notice sent via email)

– Candidates must show one of their identity documents with photo: ID card, citizen identification, passport, driving license). 

– Test result announcement: Candidates will be notified of the test results within 5 days after the test with a notice of registration for the Summer English course.

5. Test format:

The English language proficiency test has the same structure as the IELTS test:

– 04 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

– Total time for the three skills Listening, Reading and Writing: about 150 minutes.

– Time for Speaking test: no more than 12 minutes/candidate

• Candidates who have obtained a four-year Bachelor’s degree ranked Good or higher, recognized by the French government as equivalent to the first 60 ECTS after obtaining a Bachelor degree, can pass the application review process, and must be approved by the Admissions Committee with the decision of Rector.

USTH follows the European Bologna Process with LMD system: Bachelor (3 years, 180 ECTS), Master (2 years, 120 ECTS), PhD (3 years, 180 ECTS). The doctoral program at USTH was built with the philosophy that the scientist is the essential part of the society. The PhD student will be able to do the research and create new values ​​serving for the development of the society and the scientific community. 

The doctoral program was developed by Vietnamese and French scientists based on the demand of society and prioritized research fields at USTH, which allows PhD students to study in an international environment and to prepare for their future careers. Upon graduation, the PhD students are awarded the doctoral degree which is recognized by international institutions.

2. Training duration

The PhD training program is conducted in the form of formal education which is 3 years for students with Master degrees and 4 years for students with Bachelor degrees.

3. Requirements for application

         Applicants to PhD training programs of USTH should have the following qualifications and capabilities:

• Applicants must hold a Master degree in the field of application or a field relevant to the field of application; or applicant holds a Bachelor degree with very good grade in the field of application or a field relevant to the field of application. 
• Applicants have experience in doing research, which is demonstrated by his/her graduation thesis of a research Master program; or a published scientific article or report; or his/her working experience of at least 2 years as a lecturer or researcher of educational, scientific and technological institutions.
• Applicants must hold one of the following certificates of English language

• TOEFL iBT 46 or higher;
• IELTS 5.5 or higher;
• Cambridge Assessment English: B2 First/B2 Business Vantage/Linguaskill 160 or higher;
• Other foreign language certificates equivalent to level 4 of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Viet Nam approved by the Ministry of Education and Training.

• Applicants must submit a research proposal which is approved by their expected supervisors (see templates).

4. Supervisors

• Each applicant can propose maximum 2 supervisors:

• One supervisor must be USTH faculty or French visiting scientist working in USTH laboratories or USTH-associated laboratories in Vietnam
• The other supervisor could be a scientist who works for a Vietnamese or international university or a research institute.

• The proposed supervisors must: hold PhD degree; have at least 3 years working experience since PhD graduation and be an active researcher in the field of the PhD research topic in the period of 3 years prior to the commencement of the supervision of the PhD research, according to the regulations of the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training; ensure other conditions as prescribed in Circular 18/2021/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training.

5. Scholarship and fellowship

USTH offers various scholarships to PhD students who are enrolled at the university. Scholarships are as follows:

• Scholarship for Excellent Students for PhD students with outstanding academic achievements. Scholarship values for academic year 2023-2024: DS-A1: 30,000,000 VND; DS-A2: 20,000,000 VND; DS-A3: 10,000,000 VND.
• Pathway to Success Scholarship for PhD students who graduated from USTH’s Master programs and further their study in USTH’s Doctoral programs. Scholarship values for academic year 2023-2024: DS-PS1: 30,000,000 VND/year; DS-PS2: 20,000,000 VND/year; DS-PS3: 10,000,000 VND/year (the scholarship is available throughout the regular training duration).
• Capacity Building Scholarship for PhD students who are employees of VAST’s institutes and centers. Scholarship values for academic year 2023-2024: 50% tuition fee VND/year (the scholarship is available throughout the regular training duration).
• Access Scholarship for PhD students who are employees of the institutions that have signed cooperation agreements with USTH: The scholarship is granted pursuant to the agreement.
• Global Scholarship for foreign PhD students who have GPA of bachelor and master programs equivalent to 12/20 or higher. Scholarship values for whole course: GS-A1 (100% tuition fee); GS-A2 (75% tuition fee); GS-A3 (50% tuition fee); GS-A4 (25 % tuition fee).

USTH’s Scholarship and Financial Aid Council decides the list of scholarship recipients pursuant to Regulations on awarding scholarship and financial aids for USTH students. 

6. Application dossier

Applicants have to submit an application dossier including the following documents: 

1. Application form (see template).
2. Notarized copies of degrees, certificates, transcripts of Bachelor and Master Levels.* If the degrees, certificates and transcripts are neither in English nor in French, notarized copies must be translated into English. In case these documents are issued by a foreign university, the applicants should include an explanation of the grading system of that university.
3. Valid English certificates.
4. Motivation letter of the candidate.
5. Updated and detailed resume (CV) including awards, academic background and achievements, career experience or experience in student activities. (if any).
6. Certificate of employment (if any) (see template).
7. Consent letters and scientific resumes of proposed supervisors (see template).
8. Recommendation letters from 2 scientists having worked at least 6 months with the candidate (see template).
9. Research proposal in English (maximum 10 pages) (see template).
10. Full list and copies of scientific articles and publications in domestic and international journals (if any).
11. Other related documents (if any).

* Applicants having completed their Master programs but not yet received their diploma or official academic transcripts can submit a provisional letter of graduation confirmation or academic transcript (notarized copies and translations in English). Successful candidates will be required to submit all those documents to be officially accepted.

USTH follows the European Bologna Process: Bachelor (3 years, 180 ECTS), Master (2 years, 120 ECTS), Ph.D. (3 years). USTH’s teaching methods are based on a high level of practice in research and development laboratories, and close linkage with industries through internships in Vietnam and other countries. The percentage of master’s students doing internships abroad is up to 60%. All lecturers at USTH graduate from prestigious universities, of which 70% are foreign lecturers with international teaching experience. The official teaching language at USTH is English. Annually, USTH provides various attractive scholarship policies for students.
Upon graduation, students will be granted two Master degrees which are widely recognized in the world (one by USTH and one by a French Institution).
